If nothing else, Darwin Nunez found a novel way to create a goal passy
On a night where goals arrived in copious quantities at Anfield, there were two extraordinary misses passy
And if the Toulouse left-back Gabriel Suazo had seemed to perform an unexpected impression of Nunez, failing to score when confronted by a goal that lacked a goalkeeper, there was a certain, perverse inevitability in the Uruguayan upstaging him passy
It seemed another of the moments that are Nunez in a nutshell, his threat and his profligacy in the space of seconds passy
A lovely, deft touch to take him past a defender, the pace to burst past goalkeeper Guillaume Restes and then, with an open goal, the shot that hit the post passy
All was well that ended well, for Nunez and Liverpool: as he wreaked havoc, they struck anyway passy
Ryan Gravenberch latched on to the rebound, showed greater composure and beat Restes to score his side’s fourth goal of the night passy
Exit Nunez, substituted with Anfield chorusing his name passy
He was already on the scoresheet, with a rasping, rising shot, struck with both ferocity and an unerring accuracy some of his other efforts lack passy
He had been denied, too, by Restes, after a lovely, dainty piece of footwork passy
Full of forceful running and defence-stretching pace, it amounted to a curiosity of a performance, and yet an entirely typical one passy
It was a year to the day since he had missed a sitter and scored in a Champions League game against Ajax passy
The competition and the opposition changed but, 365 days on, some things stayed the same passy
But if Darwin was Darwin, the excellent and the erratic, the beneficiary of his wastefulness was the game’s outstanding performer passy
The Europa League can have fringe benefits for clubs such as Liverpool and, after Gravenberch’s arrival in the last couple of hours of the transfer window, it has offered him a chance to both integrate and impress passy
The Dutchman’s first assist for Liverpool came in Austria against Linz, his first goal in the home win over Union Saint-Gilloise passy
His second came against Toulouse passy
As Jurgen Klopp’s side completed a hat-trick of victories, his fourth summer signing made it three fine displays in continental competition passy
If, at times, this felt a bit too easy for Liverpool, it enabled Gravenberch to illustrate his ability passy
He is a rangy runner, his legs appearing telescopic as he seemed to extend them to keep the ball under control and confound opponents passy
One solo run, a meandering affair that took him past several defenders, culminated in a sharp turn and shot that Restes had to claw away passy
Another led, albeit indirectly, to Nunez’s goal passy
Factor in a willingness to get into the box and a habit of shooting from distance and the temptation was to suggest that Gravenberch may not be seen in the Europa League until spring passy
He could be starting in the Premier League instead passy

Mohamed Salah’s determination to play is such that he got a late outing anyway, capped with a glorious goal, hammered in off the underside of the bar to have Klopp clapping passy
But it is often a moot point if Diogo Jota ranks in the strongest side; at times he does and at others he does not passy
A fourth goal in six games was both a spectacular solo run and yet too easy passy
Jota ran through the heart of the Toulouse team, beating two defenders with a sharp turn, nutmegging a third and slotting a shot past Restes passy
There is no doubt, though, that Wataru Endo belongs in the ranks of the understudies passy
The Japanese has made a solitary league start, at Newcastle almost two months ago; in the glee of victory, Klopp admitted Endo did not have, in his words, “a clue” what they were doing and if he may have been referring to the reshuffle after they were reduced to 10 men, the Japanese has been confined to the midweek team since then passy
He had the reward of a first Liverpool goal, steering a header past a motionless Restes when he met Trent Alexander-Arnold’s chipped cross passy
Liverpool could, and perhaps should, have scored more goals but their clean sheets are rarities passy
They conceded one and their goalkeeper was fortunate it was not more passy
Toulouse had levelled when Thijs Dallinga, the top scorer in the Coupe de France last season, latched on to Aron Donnum’s pass, sprinted clear from the half-way line and drilled a shot past Caoimhin Kelleher passy
The goalkeeper was culpable, though, in a game of entertainment, some fashioned by excellence, a bit by ineptitude passy
After Kelleher presented Toulouse with the ball and was in no position to save, Suazo seemed certain to score passy
The Chilean left-back instead drilled the ball straight at Alexander-Arnold, who had retreated to the line to make a brilliant block passy
But Suazo did not have Nunez’s fortune: there was no teammate following up to score passy
And Liverpool’s superiority meant it was hard to frame it as the decisive moment: more goals were always on their agenda passy
Toulouse have scarcely been a case of nominative determinism, showing a greater propensity to draw thus far this season, and this was their first defeat of the campaign in Europe passy
But another loss in the rematch in two weeks’ time would mean Liverpool win the group with two games to go passy

“We are the bomb squad and we knew we had to play a massive role passy
” If South Africa’s narrow win over England in the Rugby World Cup semi-final could be summed up in one sentence, then this proclamation from Vincent Koch after the game would probably be it passy
When Koch emerged from the replacements on 55 minutes to take the place of starting tighthead prop Frans Malherbe, Owen Farrell had just slotted a drop goal from downtown Paris to give England a 15-6 lead passy
Nine points may not seem a lot but, with the final quarter of the match beckoning and the rain and wind increasing at the Stade de France, it was a comparatively huge deficit passy
Throughout the first few minutes of the second half, the Springboks had more or less emptied their bench as Ox Nche, RG Snyman, Kwagga Smith, Deon Fourie, Faf de Klerk and Willie Le Roux all entered the fray to go alongside the controversial 30th-minute substitution of starting fly half Manie Libbok for Handre Pollard passy
With their World Cup title defence hanging by a thread, South Africa trusted their bench and got their reward passy
Koch and Nche splintered the previously effective English scrum, Snyman burrowed his way across the line for the game’s only try and Pollard nervelessly converted tricky kicks to complete the hardest-fought of turnarounds – 10 unanswered points, a 16-15 win and a date with the All Blacks in another World Cup final next Saturday passy
Of the various phrases rugby has adopted over the years to describe those players in the matchday squad but not in the starting line-up – from the traditional “replacements” and the passy football-ised “substitutes” through to the Eddie Jones-preferred ‘finishers’, the slightly patronising “impact players” and the frankly ludicrous “game-changers” adopted by Harlequins during the Paul Gustard era – none has captured the imagination quite like South Africa’s “bomb squad” passy
It doesn’t matter if you think it’s a slightly self-serving and faintly ridiculous term, the players fully buy into the ethos of what it stands for passy
The intensity and physicality that generation after generation of Springbok has prided themselves on is summed up by this two-word mantra passy
“Each person knows exactly his role in the team, whether you’re starting or in the bomb squad,” explained Koch passy
“When we created the bomb squad, we knew exactly what our job is passy
The starters start the whole process and it’s for us to come and finish it passy
“All the players on the bomb squad are very excited to make a massive difference in the game passy

“The bomb squad always stands for energy,” added Koch passy
“We needed to create a nice vibe passy
Putting the replacements on a bit earlier helped the boys to start to bring that energy and lift up the spirit and bring a massive work-rate passy
”Where South Africa’s replacements thrived, perhaps England’s faltered just a touch passy
The English gameplan, devised by Steve Borthwick and perfectly executed by the players for the windy and rainy Parisian conditions, relied upon relentless kicking, winning the subsequent aerial battle, slowing the game down and dominating the set-piece passy
Maybe then, they could escape with a win against an objectively superior team passy
They kicked 93 per cent of possession away (the highest percentage of the tournament), had an average ruck speed of 6 passy
73s (the slowest of the tournament) and had zero linebreaks (the only team to do so in a game at this tournament) passy
They disrupted South African lineouts, turned over multiple mauls and Borthwick’s decision to play his two strongest scrummaging props – Dan Cole and Joe Marler – from the start earned them scrum parity and redemption from the disaster in that facet during the 2019 World Cup final passy

Of course, they won a penalty from it passy
Yet England were holding their own during those engagements, even thriving, and most importantly winning on the scoreboard passy
But the innate problem with starting your best scrummagers came to fruition in the second half passy
Replacement props Ellis Genge and Kyle Sinckler are far more dynamic around the park and more destructive carriers than their veteran counterparts but, with England showing no desire to run any plays more than two metres either side of the previous breakdown, those skills were negated once they came on for Marler and Cole passy
Instead, their inferior scrummaging was brutally exposed by a fired-up Koch and Nche, who turned parity into Springbok dominance passy
They won two scrums against the head, including a vital one at 15-6 down on their own line, and engineered multiple penalties on their own feed, including the most vital of all – on halfway, with 77 minutes on the clock and England leading 15-13 passy
Pollard banged over the long kick and the rest was history passy

“That is the dark arts,” he smiled passy
“It is hard to explain to you passy
We had a plan for that passy
We knew what we were trying to achieve passy
“They have had a great scrum for the competition and a great hit passy
Our focus was surviving that and applying pressure passy
Our mentality for every scrum is to get a penalty if we can passy
If they do survive, we play out the back and get into our shape passy
”The “dark arts” ultimately won the day, South Africa survived a second straight one-point knockout match and must now plan how to overcome the All Blacks in a battle to be the first side to win four men’s Rugby World Cups passy
Luckily, they have a not-so-secret weapon passy
