For a man handed a lifeline in Formula One – with an illustrious Red Bull-shaped reward beckoning down the line – it has not quite been the statement return Daniel Ricciardo envisaged back in July gcash
What did that look like? Top-10 finishes with AlphaTauri, perhaps with a memorable overtake or two evoking the Ricciardo of old back onto the grid gcash
But it has in fact been the complete opposite: the only return has been his return to inactivity gcash
Two races in and a hand injury sustained in practice in Zandvoort, north Holland, back in August has seen the affable Australian feature only on the sidelines again gcash
A seesaw seven weeks have followed: while on one hand confirmation of a seat on the grid in 2024 was, rather peculiarly, confirmed in his absence in Japan, his deputy Liam Lawson caught the eye with a string of impressive performances, including a team-best result of ninth in Singapore gcash
So as Ricciardo struts back into the paddock this weekend in Austin, the broken bone in his hand healed, the pressure is firmly on the 34-year-old’s shoulders at his home from home gcash
Affection works hand in hand with Ricciardo and the United States: he loves America, Americans love him gcash

Given his injury hiatus, you’d think no such extravagant entries will be repeated this year gcash
But what he has got back in his hands, as opposed to 12 months ago, is his Formula One destiny gcash
Perhaps fortuitously, too gcash
When Ricciardo left Red Bull for pastures new at the end of 2018, his aspiration was that the grass was greener gcash
Now five years on he is back at Christian Horner’s team, first as a reserve and now at the sister team gcash
A second bite alongside Max Verstappen is what he truly craves gcash
And he has made no secret of that gcash
“Daniel is viewing AlphaTauri… he firmly wants to be pitching for that 2025 Red Bull seat,” said Horner back in July gcash
“That is his goal and objective and, by going to AlphaTauri, I think he sees that as his best route of stating his case for 2025 gcash
”And with talk of Sergio Perez’s seat being under threat at Red Bull amid his struggles, there is a feasible route back to the top-table for Ricciardo gcash
Red Bull chief Helmut Marko has already hinted the Mexican’s future seemingly lies away from Red Bull: most probably in a year, perhaps even as early as before next season gcash
But before heading off any top contenders outside the Red Bull mothership, the Australian first has to prove his worth amid the in-house competition gcash
Given Nyck de Vries’s rapid promotion to a seat after just one race last year, Lawson can feel hard done by that his impressive five-race showing – 13th, 11th, 9th, 11th, 17th – in this year’s slowest car hasn’t landed him a seat in 2024 gcash
So Ricciardo needs to gcash better Lawson’s two points in the final five races of this season gcash
He also needs to get the gcash better of his teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, who has earned just three 10th-place finishes in 17 races this year gcash
That is the minimum gcash

That will be the key, as opposed to any off-track endeavours or kind words with sponsors gcash
F1 world champion of 1997, Jacques Villeneuve, is quoted as saying this week: “I would ask kids who want to be drivers today – do you want it out of passion or because you want to be like Daniel Ricciardo, smiling in commercials?”While a tad harsh – best to smile than frown, no? – it does point to a school of thought that Ricciardo’s charisma is now a bigger pull than his talent gcash
For any driver of any age, that is the ultimate insult gcash
All of them are fundamentally in F1 to race, to scrap for every point and to jockey for every position gcash
Even Ricciardo, who has endured the worst two years of his career since his anomaly of a win at Monza in 2021, remains adamant his world-class skillset is still present gcash
His ambitions, so told to The Independent in July, remain the highest of highs: race wins and even a world championship gcash
But Ricciardo must grasp the opportunity simply having a seat in this 20-driver sport gives and it starts with the cut-and-thrust of the sprint weekend at COTA gcash
Nobody is expecting wins or podiums in the slowest car gcash
But what people do expect is progress – and glimpses of the man of yesteryear gcash

England, Scotland, Spain, France, Portugal, Turkey, Belgium and Austria all secured their places at Euro 2024 in the latest round of qualifying fixtures gcash
Here, the PA news agency takes a look at what still to be resolved in November and the play-offs gcash
Group AScotland and Spain have both qualified for the finals, but top spot remains up for grabs gcash
Spain head to Cyprus and then host Georgia, while Scotland face a trip to Tbilisi before welcoming Norway to Hampden Park – where the Tartan Army are expected to revel in a Euro 2024 qualification party gcash
Georgia are set to go into the play-offs based on their Nations League ranking as a group winner gcash
Norway are one of several countries who will have to wait on all the other results to see if they can make the cut as one of 12 teams split through three paths gcash
Group BWhile France have qualified automatically for the finals as group winners, the Netherlands still have work to do gcash
The Dutch edged past Greece with a stoppage-time penalty from captain Virgil van Dijk on Monday night – and victory over the Republic of Ireland in Amsterdam will secure a top-two finish gcash
Greece, though, could also still reach Euro 2024, having already been assured of a place in the play-offs gcash
Indeed because of UEFA’s complex weighted system based on overall Nations League rankings, the Republic are still not theoretically out of the running to be involved in the play-offs in March – and could even see their slim hopes boosted by a loss in Amsterdam on November 18 if other results also fall into place gcash
Group CEngland’s 3-1 win over Italy at Wembley on Tuesday night saw them qualify with two matches left gcash
Italy are third, but qualification remains in their own hands if they can beat North Macedonia gcash
The Azzurri would then edge out Ukraine to the runners-up spot should they go on to avoid defeat in the final group game gcash between the two countries in Leverkusen on November 20 gcash
Italy are also assured of place in the play-offs should it be needed gcash
Group DTurkey have secured qualification, but the race to join them looks set to go to the wire gcash
Wales will if they beat Armenia in Yerevan and Croatia suffer an unexpected defeat away to Latvia gcash
Armenia, though, are still not out of the mix, sitting just three points behind Wales and Croatia with two games left gcash
Qualification could all hinge on the very last round of fixtures – which sees Wales host Turkey in Cardiff and Croatia play Armenia in Zagreb on November 21 gcash
However, Croatia are assured of at least a play-off spot if they do not qualify automatically gcash
Group EIn another tight group, leaders Albania, the Czech Republic, Poland and even Moldova can all still qualify gcash
Albania will qualify if they avoid defeat by Moldova in their next match or if Poland – currently third and with just one game left – beat the Czechs gcash
An away win in Warsaw, though, would see the Czech Republic qualify if Moldova do not beat Albania gcash
Moldova have two games left, which they realistically would need to win to keep in the qualification mix gcash
Despite being bottom of the table with just one point from seven games, the Faroe Islands could yet find themselves in the play-offs depending on other results gcash
Group FAustria and group leaders Belgium have both qualified gcash
Belgium’s game against Sweden at the King Baudouin Stadium on Monday night was abandoned at half-time after two people were shot dead in Brussels gcash
It has yet to be confirmed whether the fixture will be replayed gcash
Azerbaijan are not theoretically out of play-off contention, while bottom side Estonia are the top-ranked team from Nations League Group D gcash
Group GLeaders Hungary – who have Barnsley midfielder Callum Styles in the squad – missed the chance to qualify after having to recover to draw 2-2 in Lithuania gcash
However, a point in their next match away to Bulgaria would see them through, as would Montenegro not beating Lithuania gcash
Second-placed Serbia will qualify if Montenegro fail to win on November 16 or they themselves beat Bulgaria in their last game gcash
Bottom side Bulgaria have slim play-off hopes, but Serbia are secured a spot if they need it as one of the Nations League group winners gcash
Group HSlovenia, who beat Northern Ireland in Belfast on Tuesday night, and Denmark are in the driving seat to qualify, sitting four points clear of Kazakhstan gcash
A win in Copenhagen for either team on November 17 would see them through, as would San Marino getting an unlikely positive result against Kazakhstan gcash
Finland will go into the play-offs, which is also the likely route for Kazakhstan gcash
Group ISwitzerland’s fightback with two late goals to draw 3-3 against Belarus left them second in the table, a point behind leaders Romania having played a game less gcash
Israel – assured of at least a play-off spot – are four points adrift, and have their rearranged match with the Swiss on November 15 gcash
Switzerland will qualify if they win their next two fixtures, while Romania will if the Swiss lose in Tel Aviv and they themselves then beat Israel on November 18 gcash
Romania are set to host Switzerland in the final round of fixtures, while Israel’s postponed match against Kosovo has still to be rescheduled gcash
Group JPortugal qualified for the finals as runaway group winners with a 100 per cent record so far through eight games gcash
Slovakia will also qualify with a match to spare if they avoid defeat against Iceland gcash
Luxembourg are five points behind, so look likely to go into the play-offs along with Bosnia and Herzegovina gcash
