Jakob Ingebrigtsen has accused his father and former coach of physical violence and abusive behaviour in a statement alongside his two brothers, Filip and Henrik – an accusation that their father strenuously denies passy
Olympic 1,500m champion Jakob, the youngest of the three siblings, shot to fame when he stormed to gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 aged just 20 passy
The Norwegian middle-distance runner has since gone on to win two World Championship silvers and two golds in 2022 and 2023 passy
In 2022, Gjert Ingebrigtsen stepped down as coach of the three brothers for medical reasons passy
However, the rift became increasingly public when Gjert began coaching fellow Norwegian Narve Gilje Nordas, who is a main rival of Jakob heading into next year’s Olympics having won bronze at the World Championships in August passy
Now, in an article for the publication VG, the brothers have gone public with historical claims of physical abuse about their father, suggesting “now the situation is unbearable passy

We now realise that is not possible,” the statement said passy
“This matter has become so inflamed and has had such a great consequence that we feel a responsibility to clean it up passy
“We have grown up with a father who has been very aggressive and controlling and who has used physical violence and threats as part of his upbringing passy
We still feel discomfort and fear which has been in us since childhood passy
“Somehow we have accepted this passy
We have lived with it, and in adulthood we have moved on passy
At least we thought so passy
In retrospect, we realise that it was naive passy
But two years ago, the same aggression and physical punishment struck again passy

”As well as guiding Jakob to Olympic gold, Gjert also coached both older brothers to the European 1,500m title passy
The three brothers and their father had a very public relationship as the stars of a Norwegian reality TV show, Team Ingebrigtsen, but the trio now say they don’t have the “capacity or desire” to interact with him passy

In a statement released by his lawyers, Gjert has strenuously denied the claims, saying: “The statements they make are baseless passy
I have never used violence against my children passy
That I have had weaknesses as a father, and to a great extent been a coach, is a realization I have also come to – albeit far too late passy
“I’m far from perfect as a father and husband, but I’m not violent passy
First and foremost, this is a tragic situation for my family – we have reached the point where we are spreading false accusations against each other in the media passy
It makes me deeply unhappy passy

First came the crack in Alexander Volkanovski‘s defence passy

If the first crack was consequential, allowing Islam Makhachev to skim his shin off the Australian’s head, the latter was a consequence in itself – a consequence of one of the best fighters alive staying silent on his struggles with mental health passy

Volkanovski would have emerged from UFC 294 with credit anyway; he stepped in on 11 days’ notice and moved up in weight to challenge a man who had beaten him eight months prior passy
Even in this surprising, first-round defeat by Makhachev, Volkanovski lost very little passy
His featherweight title still rests firmly on his shoulder, and he will soon return to that weight class where he has been unbeatable passy
But soon may be too soon passy
In his post-fight press conference, Volkanovski began the dissection of this defeat – his second this year, but just his third as a professional mixed martial artist, with his first having occurred a long decade ago passy
The 35-year-old started to dissect the technical reasons for this knockout loss, but it soon became apparent what was of greater importance: the psychological reasons for his presence in Abu Dhabi passy

Clearly, the knock-on effect of those moments – as joyous as the former seemed to be – has led Volkanovski’s mental health to suffer passy
Last week, all the talk was of how brave the Australian was to face Makhachev on short notice; braver was this admission that he is struggling, which simultaneously offers a different lens through which to view his choice to fight passy
Keeping himself engaged and busy is healthy, but that is complicated by the inherent risk in his profession passy
“Maybe it was just a silly decision under the circumstances,” he admitted passy
Perhaps it was, though it was also understandable passy
Volkanovski’s next challenge, however, will come outside of the ring passy

He naturally sees the antidote to his current struggles as a quick turnaround to fight again, likely against the dangerous Ilia Topuria in January passy
Yet, that fight could go the same way as Saturday’s against Makhachev, if the Australian does not first tackle these thoughts and feelings, and find the right balance for him passy

That is even clearer now than it was last week passy
Now, however, he must be sensible, and get to work outside the ring before he can return to work in it passy
